SYLVAIN FLANAGAN
With visual – slides projections – and musical installations, I work on relations between images and sounds. I am interested in the paradoxial between the fact that still images are inherently silent but also have a potential for sound and music. Improvising vocal sounds on photographic images, I give these a voice and a dimension in time. Here I am trying to have different perception modes meet and influence each other. I want my pieces to be visual, sound based, musical, installations, film like, theatrical and orchestral. And none exactly of these. In the end I am looking to explore the borders of our perception modes and to discover breaches in their vicinity.
At the beginning, my pictures are without context : natural elements, landscapes and characters in indefinite situations. In involving myself personally and physically with my voice, I aim at suggesting elements of a context around what is seen and at setting a bridge between the external images and what is inside and intimate.
On another level and in complementarity to the installations, I develop an approach that is only sounds and music.
